First, be sure the car is on a
level surface, and idling properly. Once running smoothly, you
simply press the gas pedal right to the floor (gas pedal is the long
thin one on the far right). Hold the throttle in this position,
called wide open throttle or "WOT". After a short period of time
you will notice the temperature gauge rising, and your friends (and
any pets nearby) will take a step or two back. You hold it in the
WOT position while watching the tach. Eventually, it will begin to
break up because of the temperature is too high, and then maybe a
strange engine noise or two. This is normal- REMEMBER- watch the
tach, all the while continuing to hold it at "WOT". The noises begin
to get a little stranger and louder and eventually steam begins to
leave the cooling system through a newly created orifice, dont
worry, again this is normal. Continue to monitor the tachometer
while holding the throttle in this position, and listen to the
engine noises. They eventually get much worse, and are often
followed by a series of louder noises, then go away completely.
This is important- right before they go away be sure to note the
maximum level of sustained RPMs before the tach returns to zero.
The highest level which the tachometer pointed to for any length of
time was your red line.
