súrar fréttir frá Tulsa
« on: April 03, 2005, 15:04:56 »
I went to Tulsa raceway park to run the midnite drags tonight but the track was closed due to a fatal accident. A top fuel car was making a pass when the throttle stuck at full throttle. the driver pulled his or her chute to stop the car but it turned the car around. It procceded to go back towards the start line running over their pit car. Both cars then went through the burnout fence and ending up in the creek.

On the trp website it listed the driver as Shelly Howard. From other conversations it appears that two of the crewmember in the pit car were killed also.

TULSA, Okla. --

Shelly Howard
It is with great sadness that we report that Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard was killed yesterday in an accident at Tulsa Raceway Park. Shelly was participating in an exhibition run while testing at the track when her car went out of control and became airborne at about half track. When the car came back down on the track, it reversed direction and headed back toward the starting line where it crashed into the team's tow vehicle. Shelly's son, Brian, who was in the tow car at the time, was also injured and later died as a result of those injuries. Further details are not known at this time and will be posted as they become available. Please keep the Howard family, especially Shelly's husband, Paul, and two daughters in your thoughts and prayers.

eflaust kemur killer switch í öryggisreglurnar ţarna ef ţađ er ekki fyrir í reglunum , annars er spurning hvort menn hafa tíma til ađ grípa til ţess ađ notast viđ hann.

vorkenni ökumanni og vinum og fjölskyldu ţađ er ekkert gaman ađ throttle festist inni og ég kvartar oftar fyrir ađ vélinn hitnar roslega + dekkinn líka en ađ slys gerist útaf ţessu er verra (vanalega skelli ég í hlutlausan ef vélinn festist í 5000 rpm á ljósum og svona.. gerđist oft hjá mér áđur en ég lagađi ţađ)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A top female drag racer and her son were killed after her car went out of control and struck his support vehicle at Tulsa Raceway Park, police said Sunday.
Michelle "Shelly" Howard, 59, and Brian Howard, 36, were pronounced dead following the Saturday night accident, Sgt. Tim Bracken said.

"When she started off, she lost control of the vehicle and somehow it went airborne, spun itself around and raced back up the speedway," Bracken said.

Her car then hit the car her son was in.

"The estimated speed at the point of impact was 250 mph," Bracken said.

Capt. Steve Bayles said both vehicles came to rest in a drainage ditch area, about 150 feet from the point of impact. Howard and her son were thrown from their vehicles.

There were no other injuries.

Howard began racing in 1978 and was a three-time national event winner, a Division 4 champion in 2001 and 2003 and the 2004 Jeg's Allstars champion, the NHRA said. She had eight divisional event wins.

"She was certainly a great competitor and a great champion with the NHRA," Anthony Vestal, director of media relations for the NHRA, told the Tulsa World.

"Certainly, incidents involving a fatality are very rare. We have millions of cars go down the track each year and while there are incidents, the results being that extreme are very rare."

Howard was a registered nurse and is survived by her husband, Dr. Paul Howard of Tulsa, and daughters Jennifer and Tracy, the NHRA said.

Apparently, it is speculated, that when the car flipped and turned around she was knocked unconcious, from that point on, there was no driver control.

THis is indeed a sad day for racing and for the racing fraternity.
As the person assisting her with PR and web master for her new site it pains me to think I will not have the conversation I want ed to with her after testing her new car this weekend. It was just her third lap on the car and it looked to be a very good race car that was going to haul ass.
Before any more speculations get out there, I would like to clear a few things up.

Shelly's parachutes were not deployed when the blow over happened.
Basically when the car started to lift at around the 900 foot mark, she actually got out of the throttle (eye witnesses that I have talked to said the flames went out and there was silence) the air got under the car and the left side body panels started to come off. It (they) probably acted like a rudder which turned the car 180 degrees and back down facing the starting line. But by the time it started back up the track it well well beyond the finish line, probably 1500 ft (there was a time that came up on the scoreboards), the car being one of the nitro variety are hard to shutoff to begin with, but Shelly was probably unconscious from the violent spin and crashing back down to the pavement, so hitting the kill switch or the fuel shut off were probably not an option. The car refired when it hit the ground and was under full acceleration from all reports (including Tom Conways statement to his son Shane) as it headed back toward the starting line. It did hit the wall a couple times in the same lane she started the run in, and basically stayed in that lane until it tragically struck the team tow vehicle which had son Brian in it. It hit at a very high rate of speed, as the flames were as high coming back as they were going down track (I am not going to speculate, but you can do the math).

I am going to post a memorial page on her new web site which has been up and running for just over a month. I am going to post a few of the comments that are here as well as anyone that emails me at this email address
Any photos you may have as well are appreciated.

I am sorry for the long post, but I wanted as much of the facts out there as possible as too stop any speculation and rumors.

God Speed Shelly and Brian, and may all our thoughts be with Paul, Tracy Jennifer and the rest of her family.
Shelly will be sorely missed by many in the racing world.
